
Keeping Things Warm (and Dry): A Look at Our Table Heaters
When we designed these table heaters, we knew they’d be living in a rough neighborhood. Spilled drinks, wet cloths, dust—it’s a lot. That’s why we built them to the IP55 standard. In plain English? It means the housing is tight enough to keep dust out and can handle a spray of water from basically any angle without the electronics frying. You can clean around them or deal with a clumsy guest without worrying about a short circuit.
Heat, Right Now
We went with short-wave infrared emitters for a specific reason: speed. Most heaters try to warm up the air around you, which takes forever. Infrared is different. It sends energy straight to you or the object in front of it. The second you hit the switch, the filament hits its peak temperature in milliseconds. **It’s instant.**No waiting around for the room to warm up. You just feel it immediately.
Making it “Smart”
We wanted the experience to be a simple one-click deal. To do that, we connected the power stage to a smart home gateway using Zigbee or Wi-Fi. The setup is straightforward. You tap a button in your app, the gateway tells the relay to flip, and the lamp kicks in. One thing we decided against: software dimming. With this much wattage, dimming can cause voltage drops that make the lamp flicker, which is annoying. Instead, we use mechanical or solid-state relays. It’s a cleaner way to make sure you get 100% power the moment you turn it on.
The Trade-offs
Here’s the tricky part. Because the unit is sealed tight to keep water out, it can’t “breathe” like a normal piece of gear. There are no open vents to let heat escape from the internal electronics. Because of that, we had to pick components that can handle a bit more heat than usual. But keep in mind, if you leave these running at full blast in a roasting hot room, the thermal protection will kick in and shut things down to save the hardware. The best way to handle this? Don’t just leave it on 24/7. Use a smart sensor to cycle the heat on and off. It keeps the temperature where you want it and stops the unit from burning itself out.
