
Keeping Your Bathroom Infrared Heaters Safe (and Dry)
Putting infrared heaters in a bathroom—especially with high ceilings—is basically a battle against steam. You’ve got all that moisture floating around, and the second water vapor sneaks into a fixture, it creates a path for electricity to go where it shouldn’t. That’s how you end up with a nasty leak or a total short circuit. If you want a setup that’s actually safe, you have to obsess over the seals and the barriers.
Why moisture is such a pain
Here’s the thing: water droplets love to condense on the cold parts of a heater’s housing. If your wiring terminals are just sitting there exposed, that moisture acts like a bridge between the live wire and the grounded frame. We fix this by “potting” the terminals. Instead of leaving them open to the air, we encase the connection points in high-temp epoxy or silicone resin. It fills every little gap, so there’s simply nowhere for the condensation to settle.
Picking the right materials
You need materials that keep the current exactly where it belongs: inside the filament. Now, standard quartz tubes are great for heat, but the end-caps? Those are usually where things go wrong. That’s why we use reinforced ceramic insulators for the lead-in wires. Ceramics are fantastic because they don’t soak up water. Even in a room full of thick steam, they keep their resistance high. And a pro tip: grab a megohmmeter and check your insulation resistance. You’re looking for values over 100MΩ at 500V DC. If that number starts to dip, you’ve got a leak in your seals. Period.
Grounding and the “Trade-off”
Safety isn’t optional here. We wire the outer metallic reflector directly to the building’s ground. This way, if the primary insulation ever fails, the current trips the RCD (Residual Current Device) immediately. It’s a fail-safe that keeps the fixture from becoming live. But there is a catch. When you make seals tighter to keep water out, the heat inside the lamp can’t escape as easily. This means the lamp might run a bit hotter, which can shave a little bit of time off its total lifespan. It’s a trade-off—you lose a tiny bit of longevity to get a waterproof rating that actually keeps you safe. Just keep an eye on your airflow to balance it out.
