Let’s be honest: nobody wants to go hunting for a switch or fumbling with a remote in the freezing cold just to make the patio usable. If you’re putting in IP65 infrared heaters, the goal should be simple. You want to step outside, and it should already feel warm.
Why Infrared?
Here is the thing about infrared: it doesn’t waste time trying to heat up the entire outdoors. It doesn’t warm the air; it warms you. It’s like standing in the sun on a crisp autumn day. You feel that heat hit your skin instantly. But since these live outside, you can’t just use any heater. You need that IP65 rating. It basically means the unit is sealed tight against dust and rain. Without that seal, a little bit of moisture hits the internals and—pop—your breaker trips, and you’re back to shivering.
Getting the “Smart” Part Right
To get these things running on a schedule or a single tap on your phone, you can’t just plug them into a cheap smart plug. These heaters pull a lot of power. The best way to do it is by using a high-current smart switch or a contactor. Think of it as a middleman. Your smart hub sends a tiny, low-voltage signal to the relay, and the relay does the heavy lifting of flipping the switch for the high-voltage power. I love tying this into a temperature sensor. Set it to 10°C (about 50°F), and the heaters just kick in on their own. It’s a luxury you didn’t know you needed until you have it.
A Few Things That Could Go Wrong
Don’t just wing the wiring. High-output lamps are power-hungry. If you slap four 2000W heaters on one circuit, you’re going to overload your breaker and spend your evening in the dark. Double-check your wiring gauge and make sure your distribution board can actually handle the load. And a pro tip on sensor placement:Don’t put the sensor right next to the heater. If the heater warms up the sensor, the system will think the whole patio is toasted and shut off way too early. Tuck the sensor away from the direct beam of the heat. One last thing—use heavy-duty conduits for the cables. The sun is brutal on plastic, and UV rays will crack your wiring if you leave it exposed. A little extra effort now means you won’t be rewiring the whole garden in two years.
