
Why we’re ditching those old bathroom light heaters for IR
You know those old-school bathroom heat lamps? The ones with the big, bright bulbs that feel like you’re standing under a stadium light just to keep your toes warm? They’re pretty outdated. They waste a ton of power just to make the room bright, and they honestly hate being around steam. That’s why everyone is switching to high-waterproof infrared (IR) heaters. Here’s the secret: they don’t bother trying to heat the air. They just heat you. The magic of direct heat Think about it. In a bathroom, you’ve got steam everywhere and drafts coming from under the door. Trying to warm up the actual air is a losing battle. Infrared is different. It sends out waves that hit your skin and warm you up instantly. It’s that immediate “ahhh” feeling the second you step out of the shower. No waiting around for the room to warm up. Keeping things dry (and safe) Bathrooms are brutal on electronics. Between the humidity and the splashes, things can go south quickly. That’s why the waterproof rating (the IP rating) is such a big deal. You want a unit that locks out water vapor so it doesn’t mess with the electrical guts. When you’re installing one, make sure that seal between the heater and the ceiling is tight. If moisture sneaks into the quartz tube, you’re looking at a short circuit or a dead filament. Not a great way to start your morning. Quartz vs. Halogen: The trade-off Most of these use quartz glass because it can handle the heat without cracking. But a heads-up: quartz is fragile. If you bump it too hard during the install, it’s game over. Some of us use halogen gas inside to make the filament last longer. It works great, but it gets hot. Like, really hot. Just make sure your ceiling materials can handle that kind of heat without getting scorched. A quick note on the wiring Here is the part where people usually trip up. You can’t just pop these into an old light socket and call it a day. These IR arrays pull a lot more power than a basic light bulb. If you try to piggyback off an old circuit, you’ll probably just trip your breaker. You’ll want a dedicated circuit to handle the load so everything runs smooth and safe.
