
Why Your Infrared Heater Actually Dies (And How to Stop It)
Here is a little secret about infrared heaters: the heating element itself is rarely what gives out. It’s almost always the connection point—right where the lead wire meets the quartz tube—that fails first. When you’re pushing these units to their limit, the heat doesn’t just go where you want it to. It creeps backward, traveling right down the wire.
The slow burn of a bad seal
Most budget heaters use a basic adhesive or a loose crimp to hold everything together. It looks fine on day one. But then the heating and cooling cycles start. The materials expand, they shrink, and eventually, those cheap seals just crack. Once that happens, oxygen and moisture sneak inside. They start eating away at the connection. This creates a nasty cycle. Oxidation makes it harder for electricity to flow, which creates even more heat at the joint. Eventually, the insulation just gives up, the wires touch, and—pop—your heater is dead.
Doing it the right way
We decided to stop that cycle by changing how we seal the wires. Instead of just slapping some glue on there, we use a ceramic-to-metal seal. It basically creates a vacuum-tight wall that keeps oxygen far away from the contact point. And we don’t stop at the seal. We wrap the lead wires in fiberglass or PTFE braiding so they can handle the ambient heat without melting. We skip the basic solder and go with precision crimping and heat-shrink sleeves that can take 250°C+. It means the wire stays exactly where it should, even if you’re cycling the power a hundred times a day.
One quick heads-up on installation
Because these seals are so heavy-duty, they’re a bit stiffer than the cheap stuff. Please, don’t bend the wire sharply right where it leaves the tube. If you force a tight bend, you’re putting a ton of stress on that premium seal. Just leave a little loop of slack. This gives the materials room to breathe and grow as they heat up. If you wire it too tight, you’re basically throwing away the benefit of the better seal. Give it some space, and it’ll last you a long time.
