
Stop Wasting Energy Heating the Air in Your Clean Room
If you’ve spent any time in a semiconductor clean room, you know the struggle. Trying to keep wafers at the right temperature while moving them around is basically a constant battle against heat loss. Most people just use convection heaters, but here’s the problem: they spend half their time heating up the air around the wafers. It’s a massive waste of power and a huge hit to your carbon footprint. We decided to stop fighting the air and start targeting the load. That’s why we use shortwave infrared (IR) systems on our transport trolleys.
How it actually works
Think of it like the sun. IR heaters don’t care about air currents. They send out electromagnetic radiation that hits the wafer carrier and turns into heat instantly. Because it’s a direct hit, you don’t have to crank up the temperature of the entire room just to keep your parts warm. When we swapped forced-air for IR, the drop in kWh per wafer was pretty eye-opening.
Fitting it all in
Space is a luxury on a clean room trolley. You can’t just slap a giant heater on there. To keep things compact, we use high-watt-density quartz lamps. You get all the heat you need without the bulky hardware getting in the way. We use halogen-filled lamps so the heat stays steady over time, and we add special coatings to the glass. This ensures the heat goes right into the carrier, rather than baking the trolley’s own frame.
The “Gotchas” (And how to handle them)
Now, it’s not all magic. There are a few things you have to watch out for. IR lamps ramp up in seconds. It’s fast. Really fast. And that’s great for your throughput, but it puts a sudden, heavy load on your power supply the moment they kick in. If your trolley’s wiring is too thin, you’ll get voltage drops. That’s where things get messy, because your temperature uniformity goes right out the window. Make sure your electrical bus can handle that initial strike. Then there’s the maintenance. Lamps eventually burn out, and replacing them is a manual job. Nobody wants to spend four hours scrubbing a trolley just because a tube popped. We solved this with quick-connect terminals. Your techs can swap a lamp in and out quickly, keep the line moving, and keep those energy savings rolling.
