
Stop the Shatter: Keeping Your Fab Clean When Things Go Wrong
Let’s be honest. When an IR lamp pops in a high-load fab, it’s a nightmare. It isn’t just about the downtime or the annoyance of a broken part. It’s the mess. One quartz tube failing under pressure can rain shards and particulates right onto your wafers. It’s a contamination disaster that can scrap an entire batch in seconds. We’ve spent a lot of time figuring out how to stop that from happening. The secret is in the build. Most quartz tubes give up because of hotspots or uneven thermal expansion. To fix that, we tweaked the wall thickness and switched to high-purity synthetic quartz. It’s tougher. It handles those rapid heat cycles without developing the tiny micro-cracks that eventually lead to an “explosion.” We also added a specialized containment coating. Think of it as a safety net. If the filament burns out or a crack starts, this layer holds the tube together just long enough for the system to hit the emergency stop. You don’t get that “shatter effect” you see with the cheap stuff. Dealing with the heat High-load production means high wattage. If you cram too much power into a short tube, the glass can actually start to soften. It’s a delicate balance. We handle this by adjusting the voltage and the filament geometry so the heat spreads out evenly across the whole length. But here’s the thing: your cooling manifolds have to be on point. If your airflow is patchy, you’ll get cold spots. Those temperature gaps create mechanical stress on the glass. Even the best lamp on the market will fail if your cooling system isn’t actually built for the heat you’re pushing. The little things that matter We use standardized connectors because a loose fit is a disaster waiting to happen. Loose connections create arc points. Those arcs heat up the end-caps, which ruins the seals. A tight fit means no voltage drops and no weird overheating at the terminals. One last piece of advice? Swap these lamps during your scheduled PMs. Running a tube until it finally pops is a gamble. And in a cleanroom, that’s a bet you really don’t want to take.
